The pigeon is a flying feathered creature with two strong wings and two legs. The word Pigeon is derived from Latin word called pipio which means Young Cheeping Bird. Pigeon is a symbol of peace and a religious bird. There are 400 million of pigeons in the world. The most common species found is Rock Pigeon.
The pigeons are originated from Europe, North Africa and Asia. There are about 350 varieties of pigeons. It exists in all the places of world except in the Sahara desert, Antarctica, Arctic and a few other dry areas. It usually builds their nest far above like in trees and top buildings. It can be found in all the seasons.
Pigeons can breed eight times a year. The frequency of breeding is depends on quantity of food it takes. It can lay up-to two eggs each time. Both genders of pigeons can be able to feed the milk to their young ones. The younger pigeons are called Squabs. Squabs can start flying within the span of 2 months.
Pigeons eat seeds, plants and berries. All pigeons can return to their homes correctly. The life span of pigeons is from 3 – 15 years. The wild pigeons can live up-to 3 – 5 years and the captive pigeons can live more than 15 years.
In olden days, Human beings were benefited from pigeons in many ways. Pigeons were used as a source of communication over a long distance. The pigeon Guano (excrement of pigeons) is used as a fertilizer and also it is an essential ingredient of gun powder.
Pigeons are considered to be one of the most intelligent birds. It can be able to identify colors as humans and also can recognize the English alphabets.
